Feasibility Study of the Development of an expeRimEntal prototype of innovative AutonoMous and ecological aerospace vehicle(DREAM)

Project supported under 1st CALL FOR OUTLINE PROPOSALS UNDER THE PLAN FOR EUROPEAN COOPERATING STATES (PECS) IN LATVIA

The project objectives are:

(O1) To provide detailed market and literature analysis of orbit insertion methods, including air launch projects under development in order to classify development of non-conventional launching possibilities according to their characteristics (payload weight, construction, propulsion, TRLs etc.) and identify potential market demand on payload and it’s weight;

(O2) To formulate preliminary concept of DREAM vehicle based on detailed market and literature analysis of the orbit insertion methods;

(O3) To formulate and calculate characteristics of DREAM vehicle, including detailed calculations of aerial platform and spacecraft characteristics (i.e. weight and propulsion characteristics for spacecraft and aerial platform);

(O4) To calculate and analyse flight characteristics (including flight path of space craft, orbit insertion angle of DREAM vehicle in order to verify feasibility of placing carried payload on LEO;

(O5) To formulate and analyse means of DREAM vehicle flight control, including autonomous operation of the aerial platform and spacecraft;

(O6) To provide risk assessment and to build risk management system for the further DREAM vehicle development activity.

(O7) To draw a conclusion, whether the concept of the DREAM aerospace vehicle is feasible for the further development and, if so, to prepare a project for the further development of the innovative DREAM vehicle. 

 

Project activities:

1. Market and literature analysis of non-rocket launch and air launch ideas and projects under development and identification of potential market demand.

2. Definition of concept and characteristics of an autonomous aerospace DREAM vehicle.

3. Analysis of flight characteristics of innovative DREAM vehicle.

4. Risk assessment for DREAM vehicle development acivity.

5. Preparation of project for the further development of the innovative aerospace vehicle, Intellectual Property Rights protection, and information dissemination.

6. Project management and coordination

 

Deliverables:

D1.1. Report on the historical background of rocket launch, including non-conventional rocket launch options and identified development problems.

D1.2. Report on analysis of novel materials and novel propulsion technologies used and proposed to be used in the development of innovative launching systems.

D1.3. Report on market demand analysis on payload characteristics.

D2.1. Report on concept of innovative DREAM vehicle.

D2.2. Report on the calculation results of the rocket flight path and preliminary definition of weight characteristics and propulsion performance.

D2.3. Report on weight analysis and planning design parameters - calculated, schematic, design. 

D3.1. Report on air launch characteristics analysis.

D3.2. Report on DREAM vehicle flight path calculations and mathematical modelling.
