Study program "Air Transport"

 

This program offers knowledge that meets the requirements of the state standard of professional higher education and international documents regulating the profession in the field of air transport; it also provides the level of knowledge that is sufficient for performing the duties stipulated by the profession, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European Commission Regulation (EC) No 2042/2003. The scope and content of the study program correspond to the requirements set by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Civil Aviation Agency of the Republic of Latvia (LR CAA), Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia as well as to the professional standard: Aircraft Maintenance Mechanical Engineer (profession code – PS0364) or Aircraft Maintenance Avionics Engineer (profession code – PS0365).

 

 

Aims of the study program:

  • to provide the renovation and maintenance of air transport infrastructure by preparing a required number of adequately trained professionals as well as to provide necessary scientific research and give students an opportunity to continue their studies for a Master's or Doctor's degree.
  • to provide desired education in the field of engineering (qualification level 5) and 1st level higher education or professional Bachelor's/Master's degree, which would correspond to the ones obtained trough equivalent foreign study programs, as well as to provide an opportunity to study according to such a program at RTU that in the process of studies covers the following main areas of activities: teaching, consultations and research work;
  • to prepare internationally recognized professionals with 1st level higher education or a Bachelor's/Master's degree and professional education in the field of air transport who are able to carry out the maintenance of aircraft mechanisms and avionics systems as well as to analyse the performance of such systems and carry out their design.
  • To provide the knowledge that meets the requirements of the state standard of professional higher education and international documents regulating the profession in the field of air transport.
  • To provide the level of knowledge that is sufficient for performing the duties stipulated by the profession, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European Commission Regulation (EC) No 2042/2003 (20 November 2003).

 

In the process of studies students:

  • acquire fundamental scientific subjects as well as theoretical and specialization subjects in the field;
  • get practical knowledge about the structure of aeronautical equipment, principles of its operation and methods of its maintenance using AERTI laboratories, models, benches and simulators;
  • acquire practical skills required for air transport maintenance during practical placement (outside the educational institution);
  • apply the obtained practical and theoretical knowledge for developing a qualification thesis or Bachelor's/Master's thesis with a project part (1st level higher education).

Study program "Transport System Engineering"

Bachelor's professional study program "Transport System Engineering" prepares transport system engineers able to solve a wide range of complex, technology-intensive problems related to the organization of technological processes for cargo handling at transport terminals, introduction of information technologies to transport and their application, optimization, planning and forecasting of transport systems, maintenance and repair of different types of vehicles and cargo lifting and transfer mechanisms, design and manufacturing of new machines and mechanisms. Training of transport system engineers according to program "Transport System Engineering" is implemented pursuant to the requirements of professional standard PS 0253.

 

Aims of the study program:

  • to provide professional Bachelor's/Master's  education in Transport System Engineering with the aim to offer a required number of adequately trained professionals for the research, introduction and application of new technologies intended for transport infrastructure;
  • to train professionals who would be competitive in the modern labour market which is being created in Latvia taking into account the fact that its national economy is oriented towards the highest level of economic development – international or global management system (it is characterized by manufacturing close to the market, preprocessing at the place of raw material extraction or delivery, development and integration of region-wide and global transport systems, moving towards the creation of highly educated, knowledgeable, skilful and constantly developing society);
  • to offer a comprehensive, practically-applicable, enhanced professional education providing the opportunity to adapt to the labour market, join research activities in the field of transport, carry out scientific research, effectively create and use modern technologies as well as continue studying for a Master's or Doctor's degree.

Main objectives of the study program:

  • to provide the knowledge of mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and field theoretical principles necessary for the acquisition of latest developments in the field in order to get theoretical and practical competence for making contributions to the development of the profession;
  • to apply conventional study methods (lectures, practical and laboratory works, seminars, etc.) and modernized methods (case study, for ex., about the things happening in nature, manufacturing and human society; group work; work in transport departments, etc.) in the process of studies;
  • to give knowledge about trends in the development of science and technology;
  • to apply modern studies quality management methods devoting special attention to innovative ideas (teaching, learning, knowledge, experience, science, technique, technology, manufacturing);
  • to ensure the acquisition of knowledge necessary for understanding globalization processes;
  • to allow students to take an opportunity to study for state budget funds as well as to pay for studies themselves in case of large competition.

At present, the program is implemented in two directions:

  • Logistics and transport systems: knowledge about the creation, development and management of integrated and balanced multimodal and intermodal systems as well as about the design, management and development of progressive transport technological systems and technologies.
  • Vehicle repair technologies and maintenance: knowledge about modern vehicle repair technologies, maintenance and part restoration methods, durability management, the mechanisms and equipment of specialized vehicles, role of mechanical and automated equipment in the field of transport, ability to participate in the development of new materials.

Doctoral program "Transport"

The study program is implemented in three institutes of the Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering of Riga Technical University and consists of four specializations:

  • Road Transport and Traffic

    Implemented at: Institute of Railway Transport (DzTI)
  • Air Transport
    Implemented at: Institute of Aeronautics (AERTI)
  • Technical Support of Transport Systems
    Implemented at: Institute of Aeronautics (AERTI)

The doctoral study programme stipulates the acquisition of branch correspondent fundamental theoretical subjects and specialization subjects within a specific direction of scientific work as well as humanities and foreign languages.

Compulsory branch subjects:

  • Road Transport and Traffic:
    experiment design and data analysis, transport vehicle design reliability and ecology;
  • Railway Transport:
    application of mass service theory elements in transport, technology of transport logistics systems;
  • Air Transport:
    computer mathematics for air transport problems, mathematical basis of air transport maintenance, design and statistical treatment of a scientific experiment;
  • Technical support of transport systems:
    vehicle reliability, logistics systems in transport, computer analysis and calculation of the operational characteristics of transport vehicles.

Limited choice specialization subjects:

  • Road Transport and Traffic:
    logistics systems in transport, modern technologies for transport vehicle fault diagnostics, modelling of transport processes, traffic flow theory, computerized transport systems, investigation and reconstruction of traffic accidents, mechanics of vehicle collisions, vehicle and road system dynamics, vehicle transmission and suspension;
  • Railway Transport:
    dynamic loading of rolling stock components, horizontal dynamics of a rolling stock, dynamics of locomotive traction drive, vibroacoustic diagnostics of a rolling stock, rail track safety and management, rail track calculations, analysis of interaction among railway stations and divisions, optimization of train flows, statistical theory of train traffic safety, experiment design and data analysis, automated design systems in transport;
  • Air Transport:
    specialization subject I, specialization subject II, specialization subject III, specialization subject IV, specialization subject V, specialization subject VI;
  • Technical support of transport systems:
    computer simulation and optimization of transport system functioning, computer-aided analysis of damaged construction dynamics, automated methods of optimizing designed products, computer simulation and calculation of the engineering problems of hydro-gas-thermodynamics, technological methods of vehicle reliability enhancement, calculation and design of vehicle precision modular systems, modern technologies for transport vehicle fault diagnostics, damping of oscillations in transport vehicles.

Free choice courses also imply the acquisition of some additional subjects.

The aim of the study program is to prepare highly skilled engineering scientists in the field of transport and communication as well as specialists able to do pedagogical and scientific work, to ensure the renewal and provision of transport field infrastructure with a required number of specialists possessing corresponding qualification as well as to carry out necessary scientific research.

The objectives of the doctoral study program "Transport" are as follows:

  • to provide profound theoretical knowledge in the fundamental directions of transport and communication field;
  • to acquire the skill to carry out scientific research;
  • to acquire the skill of formulating and independently solving scientific problems;
  • to acquire skills for participating in scientific discussions on the topic of a student's thesis and to acquire the ability to join discussions on other scientific topics of the field;
  • to provide knowledge about innovative technical methods (teaching, learning, experience, science, technique, technology, manufacturing);
  • to provide knowledge and skills necessary for pedagogical work;
  • to consolidate the level of foreign language knowledge;
  • to promote the carrying out of internationally significant scientific research and making presentations at international conferences and seminars.

 

The control over the implementation of the tasks being set is implemented through annual attestation of doctoral students. In order to acquire skills and experience of pedagogical work, all doctoral students of the study programme are involved in the study process by delivering separate lectures to bachelor students, conducting laboratory and practical works, checking and evaluating study and examination works.

After the studies, a doctoral student defends a dissertation that contains new solutions in the field of transport and communication.
